LAMAI BEACH

LOCATION MAP

Lamai Beach  is the second most popular beach on the island. It was once more developed than Chaweng but over the last ten years has fallen way behind. For some people this means that  Lamai has retained much of its old charm, for others   it   is   of date,  unsophisitself  is  out  scruffy  and ticated.  The beach around for kilometers long and usually far less  crowded than Chaweng,  but just as well looked after and the sea is deeper and clearer. At the southern and many large boulders make interesting rock formations and pools-including the famous grandfather and grandmother rocks.

The town is smaller and more compact than Chaweng, Certainly more laid back and with a stronger village feeling as most restaurants, bars, cafes and even the main nightclub are all concentrated in the small but lively center, known as "Lamai Gulch". This area is pretty tacky and is home to dozens of girlie bars, although probably less than in Chaweng-they seem more conspicuous here and the girls are certainly noisier. Development has been a little slower and not as well financed as its neighbor and the trend in Lamai has been lower rise lower scale resorts. Although there are a few smart resorts, there is definitely a much higher proportion if budget accommodation available in Lamai. It also seems to have become a magnet for health and healing resorts and a number of healing centers and spas have popped up over the last few years causing the northern stretch to be named "Longevity beach". It also seems to be more popular with Scandinavian and German visitors and these groups certainly account for at least 70% of foreign tourists. There is certainly not as much choice when it comes to eating and drinking, but there are a few good restaurants and Chaweng is only a twenty minute taxi ride away. Lamai is still a bit of a travelers hang out and you will find many people who have been coming here for years rubbing shoulders with families and couples.

WATHER PORTS

At the time of writing there were jetskis THB1,400 per hour or THB500 for 15-minutes and paragliding THB800 Per Trip.

SHOPPING

Shopping in Lamai is not nearly so varied as in Chaweng, there are of course plenty of supermarkets and minimarts and tailors shops every 100-metres or so. Otherwise Camp Cotton-close to the pavilion resort-offers handmade crafts and clothes. Samui Hot Club-next door There are also a string of souvenir shops on the road running down to Hin-ta, Hin-Yai and another set on the ring-road at the northern entrance to lamai beach.

NIGHT LIVE

Lamai is pretty lively at night with most of the action taking place around "Lamai gulch".
